Bringing in the Sheaves delivers the message of the hard times of farm life in the early 20th century, not with the plodding of a chordal march but in a slower, more pensive, even dramatic, attitude, one that pays homage to the men and women who lived and worked with the soil every day. Their gospel fervor strikes an emotional chord for me, for this piece was inspired by a farmer who was a pillar of the church where I play piano today. Mr. B.J. Pearce, who lived and died in Fayette County, Georgia, was the Sunday School superintendent for a little chapel that would become Inman United Methodist Church, and he led the singing of this song every Sunday for over twenty years. Mr. Pearce lost his farm, his wife, and everything except his faith during the Great Depression, and this arrangement is dedicated to him. ( Key of C, no key changes, 3 pages)
