Product Description

I arranged this movement of Grieg's Holberg Suite for my community orchestra. I thinned out Grieg's much thicker scoring so the music could be played by the far fewer players in our orchestra, at the same time maximizing the fullness of the sound.  I also found that I had to rewrite the movement rhythmically!  Grieg followed a centuries-old Gavotte tradition of writing strong beats at the midpoint of the bar (beat 2 in 2/2), so that very regular phrasing doesn't fit within the bar lines. Professional string players are used to this, or can adapt to it, but amateur players are thrown off badly.  After I shifted all of Grieg's music by a half-bar my orchestra's playing of the piece was dramatically better.  Suitable for intermediate orchestras.  Duration:  4 minutes, 48 seconds
