Product Description

The Little Fugue in G minor, BWV 578 is a piece of organ music written by Johann Sebastian Bach sometime around his years at Arnstadt (1703-1707). It is often confused that the Little Fugue in G minor is somehow little in importance and duration, however, the piece is titled Little in order to avoid confusion between this piece, and his "Great" Fantasia and Fugue in G minor, BWV 542, which is longer in duration. There is some debate as to whether the title Little is attributable to Bach himself or to one of his publishers. The fugue's four-and-a-half measure subject is one of Bach's most recognizable tunes. The fugue is in four voices. During the episodes, Bach uses one of Arcangelo Corellis most famous techniques: imitation between two voices on an eighth-note upbeat figure that first leaps up a fourth and then falls back down one step at a time. This piece is mathematical and precise and has been adapted for a wide variety of performing ensembles. This arrangement for SATB Saxophone Quartet was among my very first attempts at writing for the medium when I was just graduating from high school. Now, older and somewhat wiser, I have revised the arrangement, mainly to give the soprano player a bit of a breather. I hope you enjoy performing this challenging work.
