Product Description
Released in May 1966 by the Beach Boys, "God
Only Knows" describes a person contemplating life after death to their
lover. Brian Wilson and Tony Asher, the writers, explained that the vision for
the song was for it to be "like being blind but in being blind, you can see
more." Although the pair agreed on this "vision", the two of them agonised
about including the word "God" in the title of the song Wilson specifically
not wanting to be the first writers to do so.
The music itself has been described as
"magical", "like a rich, heavenly blanket" and "one of the most complex and
beautiful songs in the annals of American popular music". It has also been
said that it is "mostly like Stravinsky in orchestral music where the key
changes four or five times". Paul McCartney has called it his favourite song of
all time and has been covered numerous times by singers such as Any Williams,
Neil Diamond, David Bowie, Elvis Costello and (more recently) Taylor Swift. It featured in the 2003 film Love Actually and the
BBC also used it to launch BBC Music on 7 October 2014, releasing it has a
single for Children in Need the next day.Great as background music (especially for weddings) or as a concert item
in its own right.
This arrangement includes alternative parts for tenor horn, treble-clef
euphonium and tuba. A recording of the original song can be found on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWPo5SC3zik.
