When the Joy of the Lord Kicks In
Experimental Trumpet Quartet

This is the last composition I wrote in 2020. Most of my compositions tend to be joyful and uplifting, but in 2020 I wrote a lot of darker, more dissonant material. As the year came to a close, I decided I couldn't let 2020 end on such a negative note. So I sat down to write something a little happier and joyful.

When the Joy of the Lord Kicks In was the result. I did not break from my current composition series to write it. This is number four in a series of compositions that utilize my original composition technique. It's a technique I created in the 90's for a few brass quintet compositions, but I never tried to use it with smaller ensembles.

The technique causes the music to be very atonal sounding, but what surprises me about When the Joy of the Lord Kicks In is that, even though I'm using that technique, it does NOT sound atonal. Very interesting! I think what's happening is that the melodies are tonal but the harmonies are atonal. That really says a lot about the power of melodies over harmonic structure.

That's why I call this an experimental composition. I am experimenting with new sounds and possibilities. The end result is that I learned a lot in the process.
