Jesus, Hold My Hand
Piano Solo for Intermediate
Arrangement by Susan Staples Bell
"Jesus, Hold My Hand" is a Gospel favorite written by Albert E. Brumley in 1933. Brumley, more widely known for his songs "Ill Fly Away" and "Rank Stranger", is an iconic figure from the Old Time Gospel Singins in the 1930s. The tune name: "As I travel through this pilgrim land" gives a hint to the lyrics. It goes on to say, "There is a Friend who walks with me. For I need Thy light to guide me day & night. Blessed Jesus, hold my hand."
This arrangement captures the feelings of comfort and joy found in the old Gospel songs, yet with a modern twist. The introduction, transition and ending bring new harmonies to the piece, while Verse 1 and the Refrain are true Gospel. Verse 2 ("When I travel thru the valley dim toward the setting of the sun- lead me safely to a land of rest") gives pause to reflect with a slower tempo. Easily accessible for the Intermediate pianist.
