What better time than Christmas, to come together to share some fun duet playing with your students? Playing the piano is often a solitary pursuit, but recently, Class Piano, or Group Piano lessons have become more popular. This piece is inspired by these new teaching opportunities- principally, by Linda Poelzer and her students at the Leading Note Music Studio in Canada, who were eager to incorporate percussion parts into their piano performance. This piece is also available as a Trio.
This arrangement of Little Drummer Boy features Primo on the melody, while Secondo is the foundation. It begins in C Major, but then modulates to the key of D Major for the last verse. Dont miss the Ravel like harmonies in the 2nd & 3rd verse of the melody. But rhythm is paramount in this arrangement: Eighth note patterns are equally traded among all three groups to foster a "regal" feeling as the little drummer boy joyfully performs for the Christ child. A fun addition: Percussion parts! The piece begins and ends with each Piano player "drumming": Primo slaps their hands on their thighs and claps their hands while Secondo creates cymbal like sounds and snap their fingers. The thigh slaps and hand claps could become an audience participation throughout the entire song.
In addition, there is an instruction page for teachers and a Rhythm Challenge page for students to practice their percussion parts, other suggested rhythms, as well as an opportunity for students to create their own!
