Before this piece was adapted with the words that made it the Carol of the Bells in 1936, the melody was part of th New Year's carol known as Shchedryk which tells the story of a swallow that enters homes to sing songs of wealth for the coming months. The original song was performed in Carnegie Hall in 1921, before the English words were created.

The original name is based on the Ukrainian word for "bountiful".
