The Church Festival Overture is based on the revered hymn tune "Ein feste Burg" and is reminiscent of a glorious, large-scale chorale prelude. Nicolai is probably best known for his opera "The Merry Wives of Windsor" and as the founder of the Vienna Philharmonic. However, much of his music has lapsed into obscurity. What a shame, because this overture is magnificent! This arrangement is a welcome addition to the brass and organ literature, and a wonderful setting of this hymn tune.
