Product Description

A transcription of Gwilym Simcock's beautiful improvisation on the enchanting melody from the second movement of Edvard Grieg's piano concerto. Performance duration is about 8 minutes, and a performance can be viewed at youtube.com/c/rupertaustin/videos.

Simcock's exploration is in ABA structure, where A stays fairly close to Grieg's original and B is a beautifully melodic and peaceful improvisation that mostly follows the harmony of Grieg's original work. Simcock plays the B section in a very free and flexible tempo which poses challenges for transcription into musical notation. The approach taken was not an attempt to accurately notate every rhythmic detail of Simcock's performance, but instead to capture the essence of his performance in notation that is fairly easy to read. Metronome markings are an approximate guide, and there is ample opportunity in this piece for the performer to find a flow of tempo fluctuation that they enjoy; not necessarily in exact imitation of Simcock's performance. Some fingering suggestions have been included.
