Possum Town Prelude was composed in
June, 2013. as a joint commission by the Starkville-Mississippi State University Orchestra and the Columbus Arts Council. The work was premiered in Columbus, Mississippi in September, 2013. "Possum Town" was the informal name of Columbus before its incorporation in 1821.
The through-composed work presents three musical ideas, representing various aspects of
life in Possum Town. The first theme represents a moist, serene, summer
morning, familiar to all who live in the South. The light, lyrical second theme
represents the deep love of tradition infused in the spirit of Possum Town.
Theme 3 is assertive and rhythmic, symbolizing the acknowledgement of
contemporary culture in the increasingly modern Columbus.
