I was entranced by the poem translated from an ancient rune by the Rev. Kenneth Macleod and I set it to music many years ago, originally calling it "The Crofter's Song". ( - see the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6LBAMfAaRk ) it concerns a poor Scottish crofter who welcomes a stranger to his humble croft, feeds and entertains him, and finds blessing, ...for the stranger was Christ. This was one of the first of my songs using the Dorian mode. The following versions are available here The original song for alto and guitar (sound sample performed by the arranger) A version for recorder quartet A version for flute and guitar A version for clarinet and guitar and A more complex version for recorder, guitar, piano and cello
