Product Description

It was composed near the end of Mozart's life, just six months before he died in 1791. This motet foreshadows aspects of his final work, the Requiem, in its rhetorical gestures, textures, and integration of forward- and backward-looking stylistic elements.

Despite its brevity of only 46 measures, the motet expresses profound Eucharistic themes with simple yet sublime means, making it well-suited for a small church choir. This contrasts with the dramatic nature of the Requiem.

Mozart composed the motet for his friend Anton Stoll, the musical director of the parish of St. Stephan in Baden bei Wien, to be performed for the feast of Corpus Christi. This sacred occasion inspired Mozart to create a profoundly devotional work.

The motet has become one of Mozart's most beloved and frequently performed sacred choral works. Composers such as Franz Liszt and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky have created transcriptions and orchestrations of the piece. Ave Verum Corpus exemplifies Mozart's mastery of the motet form and his ability to craft a concise yet profoundly moving sacred composition.
