THE SONG DEPICTS THE STORY OF KING NEBUCHADNEZZAR'S DREAM AS INTERPRETED BY THE PROPHET DANIEL IN CHAPTER TWO OF HIS BOOK. THIS SPIRITUAL WAS SUNG BY THE ARRANGER IN THE LATE '50'S IN A COLLEGE MEN'S CHORUS, ALTHOUGH NO MUSIC WAS EVER SEEN; IT WAS SIMPLY PASSED DOWN YEAR TO YEAR IN THE CHORUS. AN EARLY RECORDING BY "THE SILVER LEAF QUARTETTE", A BLACK GROUP IN THE LATE '20'S OR EARLY 30'S, HAD SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT WORDS, WITH THEIR HARMONY BEING DEEPLY SPIRITUAL, QUITE DIFFERENT FROM THIS ARRANGEMENT. LIKE MANY EARLY NEGRO SPIRITUALS AND SEA SHANTIES, THERE IS NO RECORD OF COMPOSERS. RALPH STANLEY AND HIS GROUP HAVE A BLUEGRASS VERSION WITH A DIFFERENT HARMONY, AND THE GROUP "PHISH" ALSO HAS A RECORDING OF THE SONG.
