Ragtime is a form of African-American music which emerged during the late nineteenth century. The ragtime style pre-dates jazz music and was at its most popular between the 1890s until the end of the First World War. Its related musically to the military band marches of the day; to European salon music and to the popular music of the African-American communities in cities such as St. Louis.

This is an entertaining single-movement piano trio written in homage to the African-American composer Scott Joplin (c. 1868 - 1917) whose ragtime pieces became hugely successful after he first published Maple Leaf Rag in 1899. This piece is scored for violin, cello and piano and with a running time of just over three minutes this lively piece is sure to please performers and audiences alike. It's a highly rhythmic work with plenty of cross-rhythms and syncopation - guaranteed to get the audience's feet tapping. It would work well either as a lively opening number to your recital or as an encore piece. The PDF file includes an eight-page score that shows the piano and string parts and also includes a 3-page violin part and 3-page cello part printed with slightly enlarged staves for easy reading. Its intended for intermediate players though the piano part requires a reasonably competent pianist for some passages. The piece opens in G major and modulates to C major and around ABRSM Grade 4-5. The cello part remains in the bass clef throughout and top note for the cello is G4 - an octave above the bass staff. Several passages require the use of fourth position. Near the end of the piece, theres a subtle reference to Joplins famous Maple Leaf Rag. Add this classic ragtime sound to your repertoire today!
