Product Description

One of the greatest (if not, THE greatest!) interpretations of Anderson and Weill's evergreen hit, "September Song", this is a transcription of the late, great LOU REED's arrangement and recording of this wistful, haunting lyric. Made, c.1994, for a film soundtrack in Germany, and the Sony album, "September Songs" - a compilation-album of Weill songs interpreted by Various Artists - this was Lou's second recording of the song (the first was made in about 1984 for a previous various-artists-compilation-album of Weill, entitled "Lost in the Stars"), and is quite unlike the earlier performance/arrangement by his 'more youthful self'(!); the '84 recording is an uptempo rocker with different harmonies (mainly major chords - as in the original!), while this '94 version by a slightly 'older and 'wiser' Lou is a slow, contemplative and 'dreamier' version - rendered in Reed's inimitable, laconic 'drawl' - barely sung, although Weill's melody is still clearly there in these 'ghostly' echoes. And that particular and unique, laconic 'drawl' is precisely what makes Lou's version fit the lyrics and wistful mood of the words and music - like a well-worn glove! It builds to a thunderous climax, reminding me of Dylan Thomas' rage at Death, "Do not go gentle into that good night" - both poignant and brilliant!
