This lively arrangement contains multiple harmonic and rhythmic textures that reflect something of the roots of this well known African American Spiritual. Known as an invitation song, used by Harriet Tubman to invite slaves to follow her to "the promised land," the music reflects something of the dangerous, desperate and sometimes chaotic flight to freedom. Various instruments take turns "telling the story" in this sometimes determined, sometimes mysterious music.
