Product Description
Ad Introitum of the Requiem (Missa Pie Iesu Domine), composed by Mons. Giuseppe Liberto (b. 1943), is deeply rooted in the Catholic liturgical tradition as a musical expression of the paschal nature of Christian death. Historically, the funeral rite evolved significantly after the Second Vatican Council. In 2000, the Ordo Exsequiarium Romani Pontificis was refined, balancing tradition and progress (traditio-progressio), which also shaped liturgical music. As Maestro of the Sistine Chapel Choir, Liberto fused traditional texts with Scripture-inspired material, blending Gregorian chants monophonic, meditative lines with rich polyphonic textures.
This Ad Introitum transcends mere embellishment, serving as a ritual act that musically embodies the passage from death to resurrection hope. Musically, the piece juxtaposes the austere, contemplative melodic contours of Gregorian chant with the harmonic depth of polyphony, creating a soundscape that invites prayerful reflection. This interplay evokes the paschal mystery, the transition from mourning to joy and eternal life, underscoring Christian hope.
This edition commemorates the passing of, marking the first time in 20 years that this piece was performed again in a Papal funeral in Rome.
