Product Description

St. Clair's 26-minute sonata from 1971 follows the general pattern of the classical sonata developed by Mozart and Beethoven, among others, nearly 3 centuries ago. Because the classical "style" went out of favor in the later 19th century, this sonata is a return to the style (with a modern accent) of yore, hence it would be termed neoclassical. However, it is very romantic, hence it would be termed neoromantic. It is in four movements, fast, slow, very fast, and fast, thus a very energetic work. The slow movement is particularly deep and emotional. The recording is by Trevor Barnard, a concert pianist now living in Australia (he was pianist-in-residence with WBUR Boston University radio when he made the studio recording at Boston University, presented here. Pictured is the composer in 1989. A picture of the soloist was not available.
