Product Description

This is a setting for voice and piano based on a choral piece I composed in 2014 on commission from a community choir that wanted to perform something political. That original version had a different topic. But I realized I could also write a different version on the political topic of Donald Trump, which I updated in 2025. As a newspaper journalist, I was fascinated by the overall story (though I had little direct hand in covering any of it). And as a composer, I thought it would provide rich material for a story ballad. An English version of the Mexican narcocorrido, if you will.
As a Canadian, Im proud and grateful to be living in Canada. But the United States is just next door and its descent into what increasingly seems like lawless oligarchy has frightening implications for Canada and the whole world. As former prime minister Pierre Trudeau said, its like being a mouse sleeping next to an elephant.
Some may think it odd to write such a silly piece at this difficult time. But I firmly believe in the instructional a and self-preservational power of humor. Theres a long and noble history of using satire and mockery to stand up to evil and oppression. I hope this little piece fits into that tradition.
This version is set for soprano or baritone with piano accompaniment. Depending on tempo and rubato, it runs about 3½ to 4 minutes.
Heres just a taste of the lyrics:
Donald Trump was a businessman,
or so he liked to brag.
Will you buy my steaks?
Will you buy my booze?
But evry thing he tried hed just lose.
He thought a bit
and his thinking went:
I should be the president.
Americas a disaster.
And Ill make money faster.
No matter that
he had no plans,
he blamed it all on Mexicans.
(Oh yes he did.)
