Product Description

In 2007 The Concord-Carlisle Regional High School (MA) Jazz Band commissioned arrangements (including vocals) of five early Chicago tunes. They were to be scored for a traditional jazz ensemble of 5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones and rhythm section. The director, longtime Boston area musician and music educator Al Dentino, had one interesting request for the arrangements. Although the arrangements were to be done for the whole jazz ensemble, I was to begin and end each tune using Chicagos original instrumentation. I tried to do this as much as possible given the idiosyncrasies of each tune but I also did not want 10 or more of the horn players to be sitting around not playing for too long. It was a bit of a challenge but in the end, the performances were authentic and very entertaining for the listening audiences. If you try any of the five charts, I hope you and your musicians will enjoy the sound and spirit of these classic Chicago tunes. Beginnings, 25 or 6 to 4, Saturday In The Park, Fancy Colours, & Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? -Peter Hazzard, July 2025

NOTE: Except for the short trombone cadenza at the end of this song, it is the least difficult and perhsps best known of the 5 Chicago tunes I have arranged for big band and vocals. A good intermediate band should be able to havndle it well.
