Product Description

"Beauty and the Beast" is a song written by lyricist Howard Ashman and composer Alan Menken for Disney's 1991 animated film Beauty and the Beast. Serving as the films central theme, the Broadway-style ballad was originally performed by Angela Lansbury in her role as Mrs. Potts. The song reflects the evolving relationship between Belle and the Beast, highlighting how love helps them embrace their differences and grow. Its iconic line, "tale as old as time," underscores the timeless nature of love. Lansburys gentle rendition is featured during the films famous ballroom scene, while a brief choral reprise appears in the final moments. Although initially unsure about singing it due to her aging voice, Lansbury recorded the track in a single take. A pop version of "Beauty and the Beast" was later recorded as a duet by Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson, released on November 25, 1991, as the soundtracks lead single. Disney originally enlisted Dion alone to create a radio-friendly version but, uncertain of her appeal in the U.S. market, paired her with the established Bryson. Dion had initial reservations about the project, having recently been dropped from another animated film soundtrack. Produced by Walter Afanasieff and arranged with Robbie Buchanan, the single was featured in the films end credits and included on Dions 1992 self-titled album and Brysons Through the Fire (1994). A music video, directed by Dominic Orlando, showcased studio footage of the artists interwoven with scenes from the movie. This arrangement is for solo flute with piano accompaniment.
