Product Description

Heinillä härkien ("Amid the Hay in the Oxens Trough") is a calm and peaceful Christmas carol featuring a traditional French melody (Entre le bœuf et lâne gris) from 1684, paired with Finnish lyrics by writer Martti Korpilahti, who wrote the Finnish translation in 1926. The text gently narrates the nativity scene: the Christ child sleeping peacefully in a manger, surrounded by animals in the emprace of his mother.
This SATB choral arrangement honors the carols lullaby-like origin with warm harmonies, flowing lines, and a calm, reflective tone. Each verse invites a deeper emotional resonance - from the quiet innocence of the manger to the profound sorrow and sacrifice hinted at in the final stanza. The setting allows for expressive dynamics and subtle phrasing, ideal for sacred concerts and Christmas liturgies. Sung in Finnish, the piece offers a unique window into Nordic Christmas traditions.
