Exhale is an original composition for two horns and a rhythm section, written in a contemporary jazz style. This piece uses multiple time signatures, switching between 4/4 and 7/8 during different sections. Different eighth-note groupings are utilized while in 7/8, including 2-2-3 and 3-2-2. The harmonic and melodic texture of this composition is complex and beautiful, with melodies and harmonies coming back later in the piece in altered forms. This piece combines these factors and more to evoke emotions of letting go, but also of taking control. The melody flows, but is also staggered, just like how our automatic bodily functions become manual once they cross our mind, and we are forced to exhale.
