Product Description

Ruth Crawford Seeger (19011953) was an American composer and musicologist. Her music heralded the emerging modernist aesthetic, and she became a central member of a group of American composers known as the "ultramodernist". She composed primarily during the 1920s and 1930s, turning towards studies on folk music from the late 1930s until her death. Crawford Seeger's reputation as a composer rests chiefly on her New York compositions written between 1930 and 1933, which exploit dissonant counterpoint and American serial techniques. 'Chant, 1930' can be considered a counterpart piece to her work 'Three Chants for Female Chorus' (also from 1930) and her harmonic language is very much evident here - expanded from the original SATB and wordless soprano soloist, this arrangement for concert band is part of ongoing project to bring more music by women into the worldwide repertoire. #arrangemegoals2023
