Product Description

'The Wreckers' is originally a French-language opera in three acts composed by Dame Ethel Smyth to a libretto by Henry Brewster, telling of the plundering of ships by Cornish villagers. Completed in 1904, it was premiered in 1906 in Leipzig in a German translation, with cuts, before being championed by Sir Thomas Beecham and given performances in 1909 in London, now in an English translation prepared by the composer herself. 'On the Cliffs of Cornwall' is the Prelude to Act 2 of the opera, featuring many of the sea motifs heard in the famous Overture, but also foreshadowing some of the events still to come. This arrangement for advanced symphonic wind ensemble (including prominent parts for harp) has been made as part of an ongoing project to bring more music by women into the worldwide concert band repertoire. #arrangemegoals2023
