"Theme and Tangents" is a work or high-intermediate difficulty for woodwind quintet, written in a contemporary classical style. It starts out with the statement of a theme by the oboe and then, true to the title, goes off into several different tangents. The first is a lively romp that progresses through the different instruments before ending on a tutti statement. This is followed by an echo section with a dolce melodic line which transitions to a sort-of Russian sailor's dance-like, led by the horn and clarinet. The oboe finally signals the beginning of the end, with a tutti statement of the oboe's original theme wrapping up the work. A great piece for solo & ensemble competitions or for festivals.
