The trumpet is not my favorite instrument, nor the second or third of my choice, however when I received the commission for this piece from SAMP, what really stimulated me was the really inexplicable esteem that everyone had for the person of the Bandmaster Joaquim Lopes.
This concertino unfolds in three connected sections. It opens with the main melodic and rhythmic ideas, followed by a simple, song-like interlude, and ends with lively Balkan-inspired sounds. Written for a trumpeter familiar with that tradition, the piece explores the rich, often-overlooked low register of the trumpet.
