I was fortunate to take some composing/arranging lessons from Joel Kaye (former saxophone with Stan Kenton and others) who was a protegé of the great Johnny Richards (composer of "Young At Heart" and many others). Joel wanted me to write something in Johnny Richards's big band "latin" style, and "La Buena Vida" is the result of those lessons. It has all the hallmarks of a Johnny Richards chart; a brassy fanfare, beautifully inviting chord changes, an interlude, and auxiliary percussion. I'm happy with the way this one came out...playable by an average high school group while still presenting some challenges.
