Guthrie grudgingly agreed (Oh boy, who is this guy?), saying, "Buy me a beer, and I'll listen as long as the beer lasts." Arlo later quipped, "That was the best beer ever," as "City Of New Orleans" became a big hit for him on 1972, climbing all the way to #4 on the Billboard Easy Listening charts. It was Guthrie's only top-40 hit. The lyric beautifully reflects upon the fading glory of the rail era.
