Unwanted tells the story of two lonely souls in despair, each represented by one of the instruments. Despite feeling so unwanted, the 6/8 time of the composition reflects a desire to dance their way out of suffering and into the light, and on that path also toward a deeper human connection again. As they find each other, they encourage one another through troubles on the path toward liberation.

Gautestad wrote the piece in the fall of 2024 when he felt deeply unwanted over several weeks, but found comfort in remembering how universal this experience is and the many who have overcome it. The music that came to his mind and heart gradually liberated him.

Unwanted is described by listeners as hauntingly beautiful, and Gautestad hopes this beauty will inspire healing and renewed hope, as well as remind us of the great potential of our soul to overcome the darkness when we reconnect with God and our fellow human beings.
