Commissioned by clarinetist Vasco Valente, this piece was written for the duo he recently formed with baritone saxophonist Filipe Valentim two brave performers of big, bold instruments.

The music is built entirely from the letters of the name Sá Leão, a notorious figure in Portuguese underground cinema. Despite what the title might suggest, the sound world avoids clichés: registers are blocked and fused, timbres merge rather than contrast, and the instruments engage in an intimate, expressive dance.

Part of an upcoming series inspired by figures from the national and underground imagination, Sá Leão is a bold and cinematic exploration of sound, identity, and misdirection.
