Product Description
My aim in resurrecting these relics from Saties notebooks is to create performable versions of (mostly) unpublished sketches in order to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of Erik Satie. Below I have indicated the extent of editorial intervention where possible, although full details will only be evident to those who examine and compare these pieces with the original manuscripts, all of which are held by the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BNF). Where useful, I have put added material in square brackets. The manuscripts I consulted are all eight stave, landscape format exercise books of the kind used by students. Each has approximately 22 pages. Satie used them to sketch new pieces, experiment with scales and harmonic patterns, write complete drafts, jot down texts and a few bon mots as they occurred to him, and for occasional drawings and the totting up of his expenditures. Pages were often left blank when Satie moved onto the next project. He left behind several complete pieces, others that are almost complete, and fragments that required varying degrees of editorial and compositional intervention to bring them to life. Throughout these pieces, where practical, I have attempted to reproduce Saties notation, even where his musical orthography is idiosyncratic. In this musical reliquary, where titles are mine rather than Saties they are marked in these notes with an asterisk*.
