Product Description

La palummella is a popular, anonymous Neapolitan serenade from the late 19th century.
The surviving lyrics (around 1873), usually attributed to Teodoro Cottreau or Domenico Bolognese, are based on a Romantic allegory: the speaker sends a "palummella" (a little butterfly) to carry his longing and love to his absent beloved, imploring it to kiss her from him. The device of love via messenger is a staple poetic trope, combining intimacy, yearning, and a bittersweet separation. On the surface, "Palummella" is a tender love song, but its subtext reveals its subversive undertones. Initially circulating as anti-Savoy (Italian government) and pro-Southern-liberty themes, it lamented the perceived "unjust" annexation of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
