Anthem
Arranged by Daryl McKenzie in the style of the Broadway production Chess for Vocal with Concert Band and Rhythm Section. This powerful and dynamic arrangement features a rich orchestration including voice, full woodwind section (2 flutes, oboe, 3 clarinets, bass clarinet, bassoon), a 5-saxophone section (with soprano doubling alto 1 cued in oboe), 2 French horns, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, baritone horn/euphonium, tuba, timpani, percussion, piano, synthesizer (strings), guitar, bass, and drums.
The work is set in the key of D and includes flexible scoring options, allowing it to be performed with a reduced brass section of 3 trumpets and 3 trombones without losing its fullness and impact. This arrangement captures the theatrical intensity and melodic drama of the original Chess score, making it an excellent choice for concert band performances featuring a solo vocalist.
Whether for concert, competition, or educational purposes, this arrangement offers a challenging yet accessible experience for musicians and vocalists alike, with careful attention to balance and color across the ensemble.
