Product Description

Mozarts Canon for 4 Voices in G major, K. 232 (also listed as K. 509a), commonly known by its German text incipit as Lieber Freistädtler, lieber Gaulimauli, is a short, lively canon composed in Vienna in 1787124. It is scored for four unaccompanied voices and was originally intended as a humorous, social piece for Mozarts circle of friends rather than for formal concert performance.

The canons text pokes fun at specific individuals known to Mozart and his friends, using playful and sometimes ribald language. Names like "Freistädtler," "Gaulimauli," "Finta," and "Scultetti" refer to real people or characters from a farcical play, reflecting the composers penchant for musical and textual wit. The work is one of over two dozen canons Mozart wrote, most of which were intended for amateur gatherings and social occasions.
