About
Isolation was written by Brazilian composer Chrystian Dozza in April 2020 for the Online Guitar Ensemble project, during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic. Originally conceived for remote performance, the work explores the experience of isolation and its emotional consequences, while also serving as a creative response to the unique challenges of ensemble music-making during that time.
Although first performed virtually, Isolation is equally effective in live performance, where its layered textures and subtle interplay take on an added dimension. Dozza makes innovative use of the Ebow on electric guitar to create sustained, atmospheric lines that contrast with the rhythmic and harmonic motion of the classical and acoustic guitars. The result is a compelling blend of color, mood, and ensemble dialogue.
Commissioned and dedicated to the Jacobs Guitar Ensemble at Indiana University, the work features independent parts for 2 electric guitars, 6 classical guitars, acoustic guitars, and 2 basses. Its flexible scoring and contemporary sound make it well suited for advanced high school, university, or professional guitar ensembles seeking engaging modern repertoire.
