Product Description

Sumer Is Icumen In is the earliest known piece of 6-part polyphony. The manuscript was copied by monks of Reading Abbey in about 1260 and it may have been written by W. de Wycombe, an English composer and precentor at Leominster Priory. It takes the form of a round. Four voices sing the melody in canon, while the other two sing the Pes. part which creates a harmonic ostinato. The words are joyful, announcing the arrival of summer. They are also rustic - bulluc sterteth, bucke verteth / bullock prancing, goat farting. The cuccu / cuckoo features as a refrain, wrapping up the piece as all 'sing cuccu'. It works as a round for 6 equal voices or mixed voices. Equally, it can be sung just as a single melody, with the ostinato, or with all four canonical lines.
Duration 1'30" (with single melody line, then 4 part round).
Scored for 6 voices (equal or mixed).
