Giovanni Battista Sammartini (1693 1770) was an Italian composer, violinist, organist, choirmaster and teacher.
Sammartini became famous as a church composer and obtained fame abroad. He also wrote music to be performed at state occasions and in the houses of the nobility. He was highly regarded by younger composers including Johann Christian Bach and Gluck, who was his student from 1737 to 1741.
