5 Shakespeare Songs is my first entry in the Modern Classics Collection (Early Music Series). Unlike my earlier works in the Baroque, Classical and Romantic series, these stories are not my own, but taken from the plays of Shakespeare. Each piece employs techniques of the era to embody the setting and emotional subtext of the chosen text and the play it was pulled from. As such, each is unique and can be performed on their own or with other similar or contrasting pieces. However, when all 5 are played in sequence they function as a single multimovement work.

Works in the Modern Classics Collection are written in one of the many styles that occurred before, during or after the "common practice period". While significant focus is placed on honoring the historical traits of the chosen style, these pieces are not idiomatic for purely academic reasons. They all stem from an emotional prompt, with the challenge being to effectively convey this to a modern listener using only the tools of the chosen era. The intention is to add music to the existing repertoire that is not only enjoyable to perform, but that is also engaging and accessible to both the veteran and casual audience. For the composer, they serve as an emotional and intellectual exploration of the universal truths that lie beneath the art of composition itself.
