Product Description

Beethoven's String Quartet in C# minor is a well-known masterwork among the great composer's published work. The first movement is contrapuntal in nature, while also being heavily romantic. This juxtaposition of strict and flawless counterpoint, like that of Bach, with beatiful chromaticism and romanticism is what characterizes Beethoven's latest music. Franz Schubert requested the string quartet be played at his deathbed, as he laid awaiting permanent rest. He was quoted as saying once about the piece, "After this, what is left for us to write?"

This work calls for three euphonium parts and two tuba parts. The upper tuba part is written for F tuba, and the lower for CC. This arrangement is very difficult, and is of appropriate level for either a highly advanced highschool ensemble or a moderately skilled college ensemble. Throughout the score, there are some markings in parenthesis. These markings were not added by Beethoven, rather by editors or the arranger. For an accurate idea of all of the markings Beethoven himself wrote, one should consult an urtext edition. Performers should watch or observe a real string quartet performing the original work to get a an idea of how this music should be approached.
