Product Description

My composition Unforgiven paints a vivid image of the betrayal between two fictional characters, while one character is succeeding in life the other is on the sideline watching and releasing there is nothing left for them. Unforgiven is written in C# minor using the piano, cello, and violin, and explores the themes of melancholy and resentment. The progression of F#m - G# - C#m - A - G# is used to create a dark and poetic sound using the cellos low register to create a drone-like sound. This creates sustained tones and symbolizes the inevitability and permanence of the story for the character standing aside, in contrast to the other successful character's dynamic advancement, the drone's static position is mirrored by its unchanging nature. This is heard in bar 46 - 50 where the cello is playing long sustained drone notes while the violin plays moving notes to create the contrast between the two instruments. Additionally, in bars 21 38, I have implemented a call-and-response between the violin and cello. This represents the competition between the two characters, while the violin plays a brighter-pitched phrase representing dominance and ambition and the cello plays a darker, lower phrase to represent the character as a second choice. They eliminate the difference between them as they come together in unison, signifying a moment of realisation. With one figure succeeding while the other moves aside, this changewhich may be emphasised by harmonic resolutionsymbolizes inevitable fate. Through the use of pitch and structure, I have successfully composed a piece that conveys resentment and betrayal.
