Three miniatures depicting different dream-states, from the turbulent, psychologically unstable Freuds Divan, Vienna, 1936, to the untethered ethereality of Adrift in the Void, to the manic-obsessive Stuck in the Machine. The first movement uses the series from Schoenbergs 4th String Quartet of 1936a dark period of political instability similar to our own, and in the three movements, contemporary techniques such as harmonics, whistle-tones, and tongue-rams add color and texture to the solo flute line.
