Inspired by winter in the Pacific Northwest, this piece portrays the glowing hopefulness found in the bright moss of damp woods. Although the skies are gray and the trees are not yet leafy, the softening green moss promises renewed life amid the dullness. Lyrics are based on the composer's original poem written in February 2021.
The piece was premiered in March 2025 by Cascadian Chorale (Bellevue, Washington) to great acclaim.
Scored for unaccompanied SATB with moderate ranges. Common time, moderate tempo, key of 2 sharps. No accidentals. Harmonies based alternately in Mixolydian and Aeolian modes. Chorus and 3 verses. Duration approximately 5 minutes.
