Product Description

The Prelude in D of Bach's Well-tempered Clavier, Book 2, is a charming and relatively little-known piece from the Well-tempered Clavier, useful for weddings, high school solo and ensemble performances, and other occasions. All three parts are active throughout, but the tempo (ca. 70 bpm) is moderate. There are no original interpretive markings in this piece except for the slurred eighths, so you have a blank slate of interpretive gestures to enjoy exploring. The original time signature was cut-time and 12/8, indicating that occasional measures will occur in duple meter and the quarter be the same as the dotted quarter. A general rule of playing eighths short and sixteenths bowed will yield a pleasing result. The recording is an automated rendering of the string trio version and included here just for reference and to spark your imagination about probable tempo.

A number of the preludes and fugues in Bach's Well-tempered Clavier are suitable for string trio with occasional adaptations. Look for other preludes and fugues on this same site.
