Product Description

The Prelude in B minor of Bach's Well-tempered Clavier has a steady eighth-note cello part supporting slow-moving imitative melodies in the violin and viola. Bach gets adventurous with harmony, especially toward the end, which will challenge the ears of younger players. There are no dynamic or other expressive markings in this piece, so the players are left to decide matters of interpretation. It is often the case that on repeats, the instruments will ornament more often. An easy rule to keep in mind is that Baroque ornaments will usually sound most authentic when they are metrically precise.

The recording is, of course, just an automated rendering from a notation application and included here just for reference and to spark your imagination about probable tempo and how to add phrasing and other expression to suit the moment.

A number of the preludes and fugues in Bach's Well-tempered Clavier are suitable for strings with occasional adaptations. This arrangement is one of several arrangements of these beautiful pieces that are relatively unknown to musicians who don't play the piano or harpsichord or otherwise study Bach's keyboard works - they should be better known! These gems ranging in length from a 2 to 6 minutes are useful for weddings, funerals, concerts, high school solo and ensemble performances, and other occasions.
