Product Description

Basso Concertino is a piece for tuba solo and brass quartet (2 trumpets, horn and

trombone). Gregory Fritze composed it in 1984 for the Thundermist Brass Quintet. It was

premiered that year with the composer as tuba soloist. During the 1980s it was performed

several times in recital and sometimes for childrens concerts in the public schools. It is an

exciting tuba feature with expressive tuba melodies, and solo range that encompasses

four octaves.

It is in two sections, the first being in a slow tempo where cantable melodies are

featured. The second section is in Allegro tempo that is more rhythmic, including some

jazz rhythms. An extended cadenza sets up a return of a cantabile segment before the final

Allegro featuring a scale to the double high C.

Gregory Fritze recorded the solo with the Cambridge Symphonic Brass Ensemble in

1986 on Crystal Records (vinyl) S552 and can be heard on youTube. In 2021 Sergio Finca

recorded the tuba solo with the Spanish Brass on Spanish Brass Records SB036.
