Product Description
An Early Evening Walk for tuba and piano, by Gregory Fritze was transcribed in 2019. The original is from A Day In Valencia, a large four-movement symphonic piece for concert band commissioned by and written for the Primitiva de Llíria, of Valencia, Spain in 2010. As part of the commissioning request, Salvador Navarro and Miguel Moreno, the President and Conductor of the Primitiva, asked that one movement of the piece be in homage Harvey Phillips, who was the former tuba teacher of Moreno. As Phillips was also my former teacher, it was a request that I was happy to abide. Harvey Phillips is often thought of as the greatest tubist of the Twentieth Century, he would often play his favorite chorale by J. S. Bach Come Sweet Death. A short excerpt of this chorale is presented before the final phrases of the aria, accompanied by the harp and cello.
In 2023 A Day in Valencia was arranged for full orchestra. The premiere performance of the third movement - An Early Evening Walk was by the Primitiva de Lliria Orchestra, Miguel Moreno, tuba soloist. It was recorded by the London Symphony on February 24, 2024 at St. Lukes on Old Street, London, England. It is available on Naxos CDs.
