Product Description

This bold, passionate, and fiery new violin concerto explores various rhythmic elements of traditional Latin dance styles. I highly recommend studying the physicality, intimacy, and conviction of a variety of Latin dances to fully grasp the style of this concerto. Rooted in my own personal life experiences, there are moments in this work that exhibit strength, curiosity, playfulness, heartbreak, determination, celebration, and a most tender love. I have dedicated the romance theme in the third movement to my husband.

This concerto is meant to be cinematic, expressive, and flexible. I hope each violin soloist feels free to interpret the music with their own unique voice. I want to encourage soloists to write or improvise their own cadenzas and to add ornamentations and flourishes to the music that embody their own artistic vision. I have included optional cadenzas for those who may prefer to play my version, but I hope each soloist tries to personalize the score in some way. This work is not meant to ever be played the same way twice, and above all, I hope soloists who play this music will let the music live and breathe.

While the solo part of this concerto is the most technically demanding and prevalent in the score, I want to emphasize the importance of the dialogue between the soloist, conductor, and orchestra. The dialogue between the orchestra, section soloists, and the concerto soloist has the capacity to be very meaningful. I really wanted to emphasize the beauty of chamber music communication when writing this work, and I hope advanced, collegiate, and professional ensembles planning to program this concerto will take that into consideration.

As I reflect upon my life, it feels like it has been an intricate and soul-stirring dance through time. To me, this concerto is about determination and spirited resilience. It is my hope that when people hear this concerto, they will feel the urge to unapologetically dance through both both their most harrowing grief and their brightest triumphs.
