Product Description

This overture was written for a singspiel. An early precursor of modern musicals. It tells the unbelievable, but apparently true story of the French soldier who remained behind in a German border village during the Napoleonic Wars so he could marry the daughter of the village magistrate.
The singspiel failed and Schubert never heard the overture performed, but, it is well written and deserves public performance.
A condensed (wind quintet) score, (which is easier on the eyes for conducting) is available.
